Söndgerath Pumpen is the official main sponsor of the Rot-Weiss Essen football team for the 2015/16 season
We, as an Essen-based company, are deeply rooted in the city of Essen and the Ruhr region, and are especially happy to be able to support our home team, Rot-Weiss Essen, as official main sponsor.
Rot-Weiss Essen is Essen's best-known football club. It was founded on 1 February 1907 as SV Vogelheim. Following several amalgamations with other clubs, the club's name has been Rot-Weiss Essen since 1923. The club celebrated its greatest achievements in the 1950s. In 1953 Rot-Weiss Essen won the DFB Cup against Alemania Aachen. Two years later, on 26 June 1955, Rot-Weiss Essen (or RWE for short) became German league champions for the first and only time in a 4:3 victory against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
In the 1955/56 season Rot-Weiss Essen was represented in the then European Cup Winners Cup. This made RWE, in addition to 1. FC Saarbrücken, who started the competition for the then still independent Saarland, the first German club in this European competition. However, Essen was knocked out in the first round against the Scottish champions Hibernian Edinburgh at 0:4 and 1:1.
In 1994 the club reached the DFB Cup final in Berlin against Werder Bremen. The club was promoted a total of three times to the German first division (1966, 1969 and 1973).
In the 2005/06 season the team became champions of the northern regional league (Regionalliga Nord) one fixture before the end of the season, and thus won promotion to the second division. This was the second promotion in two years, because RWE had to leave the second division in the 2004/05 season after only one year's residence.
In November 2005 Pelé became honorary member (membership number 23101940) of Rot-Weiss Essen. At the membership certificate award ceremony, Pelé said: 'It is a great honour for me to now belong to the club in which the "Boss" (Helmut Rahn) played.' The club has around 4400 members (as of August 2013).
